If you’ve been daydreaming about an Alaska Cruise Celebrity style, here’s my honest take after finally doing the trip I planned for 18 months.
In June 2025, my family of four sailed a 7-night round-trip Seattle to Alaska itinerary on Celebrity Edge, and it delivered exactly what I hoped: huge scenery, unforgettable excursions, and the kind of quiet “wow” moments you just can’t get on a beach vacation.
But I’m also going to tell you what I’d skip, what surprised me, and who I think this cruise is actually best for.
The quick verdict: Would I recommend Celebrity for Alaska?
Yes, with one big asterisk.
I believe Celebrity is an amazing choice for Alaska if you want:
- A more relaxed, boutique-hotel vibe onboard
- Beautiful spaces to take in the scenery
- A trip where excursions and nature are the main event
But if your crew needs constant high-energy entertainment, waterslides, and lots of kids onboard, you may be happier on a more family-heavy line.
Our itinerary (and what each stop is really like)
We sailed round-trip from Seattle with stops in:
- Ketchikan
- Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier (scenic cruising)
- Juneau
- Skagway
- Victoria, BC (evening)
Ketchikan: Go small-group if you can
Ketchikan is charming, but I’ll be honest, it can feel crowded fast when multiple ships are in.
We booked a private island tour (through Viator) with a local guide, and I’d do that again in a heartbeat. We found a tucked-away waterfall, learned a ton about the salmon run and local life, and saw totem poles that added real meaning to the day.
If you’re planning Ketchikan, here’s what I always tell my clients:
- Prioritize a tour with a local guide if possible
- Understand that wildlife viewing can be seasonal, especially early in the season
- Leave time for Creek Street and the “Welcome to Ketchikan” photo
And yes, my husband and son did the Alaskan King crab thing. Pricey, but worth it at least once.
Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier: This is the reason you go
This scenic cruising morning was one of those travel moments that makes you feel quiet inside.
Our ship got incredibly close to Dawes Glacier, and the combination of teal water, waterfalls pouring down the cliffs, and the stillness of the fjord honestly felt unreal.
A few practical notes that matter:
- The ship had a naturalist narration on the PA system, but you won’t hear it well outside
- We loved watching from the top deck near the Rooftop Garden so we could easily switch sides
- The infinite veranda setup was perfect for Alaska because you can enjoy the views without stepping into the cold
Juneau: I’m calling it. Helicopter glacier landing is a must.
Juneau was the highlight of our entire trip, and it’s because we did one thing my husband put on the “no exceptions” list: a helicopter ride to a glacier.
I’m afraid of flying, so I was nervous. And then we lifted off, headed into the mountains, and I stopped thinking about fear and started thinking, “How is this real?” Landing on the ice was surreal. It was quiet, vast, and genuinely humbling.
If you only splurge once on an Alaska Cruise Celebrity itinerary, I vote you splurge here.
My opinion is simple:
- Juneau is an excursion port, not a “wander around downtown all day” port
- Book early, because helicopter tours fill up fast
- If you’re debating it, do it. You won’t regret it.
Skagway: The scenic railway is touristy… and totally worth it
We did the White Pass Scenic Railway, and it was exactly what you want from Skagway: dramatic views with minimal effort.
It’s relaxing, beautifully narrated, and it feels like you’re riding through history. The snow-capped peaks were still showing when we went, which made the views even better.
If your Alaska plans are packed with intense excursions, the train is a nice “breathe and stare out the window” kind of day.
Victoria: My least favorite stop, and I’ll tell you why
Victoria is the required international stop because of the Jones Act, and on our sailing it felt squeezed in. We docked around dinner time and left late the same night.
We booked whale watching here since we hadn’t earlier, and while seeing a humpback mom and calf was incredible, the reality was:
- A long ride out
- Rough water (we had big swells)
- A short window actually near the whales
I’m glad I did it once. I don’t personally need to do it again.
Celebrity Edge for Alaska: What I loved onboard
I’ve cruised Royal Caribbean most of my life, so this was my first time doing Celebrity. And I get the hype now.
The ship vibe: Floating boutique hotel
Celebrity Edge felt:
- Modern and elegant
- Calm, not chaotic
- Designed for adults, but still workable for families
The spaces we used most:
- Grand Plaza (martini bar energy at night)
- Coffee bar (my morning ritual)
- Rooftop Garden (perfect for scenic cruising)
- Eden (quiet by day, lively by night)
Our stateroom: Infinite Veranda, and I’m a fan for Alaska
We booked an infinite veranda stateroom, and for Alaska, it was fantastic.
Instead of a traditional balcony, the window lowers at the push of a button. We used it constantly during glacier cruising. It made the room feel more spacious and flexible.
One important drawback: when the window is open, the AC turns off. Fine for cool Alaska. I’m not convinced I’d love it in the Caribbean.
Food: Best cruise buffet I’ve personally had
I don’t say that lightly. The buffet impressed me all week.
We also did early seating in main dining (Tuscan) and kept things simple with no specialty dining.
Is Celebrity Edge a good Alaska cruise with kids?
This is where my opinion gets specific.
We sailed with our two boys (10 and 12), and they did great with the excursions. The glacier helicopter landing was a core memory for them.
But there were not many kids onboard, and the kids club programming felt a little young for that in-between age.
What worked for us:
- We traveled with another family, and that made a huge difference
- We gave the boys a little freedom with check-in times
- They enjoyed all-ages activities like trivia and game shows
My honest guidance:
- If your kids need constant kid-centered fun, you might prefer Royal Caribbean for Alaska
- If your kids can handle quiet moments and love nature, Celebrity can absolutely work
What we paid (and how I’d budget it if I did it again)
Costs can vary a lot by sailing and promos, but here’s what our trip looked like:
- Cruise fare for our family of four: $4,266
- Classic drink package (per adult, with gratuities): $428.26
- Wi-Fi (one device): ~$150
- Ketchikan private tour: $680 total (we had a group, about $56.67 per person)
- Juneau helicopter glacier landing: ~$456 per person
- Skagway White Pass Scenic Railway: $180 per person
- Victoria whale watching: $158 per person
- Gratuities: ~$126 per person
- Souvenirs and port food: ~$500 total
My biggest money-saving opinion: Book early, then reprice
Here’s what I saw firsthand. Our sailing price dropped after we booked, more than once.

- Scenic cruising day with a good viewing plan
- The White Pass train for a slower-paced port day
I’d probably skip next time
- Whale watching out of Victoria (for me, once was enough)
- The drink package if we weren’t going to use it much (I might go a la carte)
