I keep getting the same question in my inbox: “Okay… but is Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres actually ready now?”
Because let’s be real, a brand-new resort at grand opening is always a little bit of a gamble. Even when the bones are beautiful, there’s usually something that isn’t finished, isn’t staffed up yet, or just hasn’t found its rhythm.
So I went back.
I filmed a brand-new YouTube video at Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres on a busy weekend (Valentine’s Day weekend, aka a true stress test). Higher occupancy, more moving parts, more people, more pressure on service. And that’s exactly why I wanted to see it again.

The quick vibe check: it feels alive now
One of the biggest differences from my first visit is the energy. Not “party resort” energy. More like… the resort is finally operating the way it was designed to.
The main pool actually feels like a main pool now: music, games, people laughing, couples meeting other couples. The restaurants feel busier in a good way. The evening shows feel full. The walkways don’t feel like you’re wandering through a resort that’s still waiting for guests to arrive.
If you’re someone who avoided booking because you like to let a new property work out the kinks first, this is the kind of update you’ve been waiting for.

What’s new since grand opening (and why it matters)
In the video, I walk through the biggest “this wasn’t ready last time” changes, and a few of them are honestly game-changers for the experience:
- All the buildings are open now, including areas that felt unfinished or quiet on my first trip.
- The resort has more dimension with the new sports complex (yes, pickleball is having a moment, and yes, they did it right).
- Aroma is fully up and running now, and if you love a mid-day coffee + treat stop, you’ll understand why I’m excited.
- The spa hydrotherapy circuit is fully operational, and it’s genuinely one of the best spa setups I’ve seen in the Excellence brand.
It’s the difference between “pretty new resort” and “fully functioning luxury all-inclusive.”
Landscaping update: it’s finally starting to match the vision
I know the landscaping was a big talking point after my first video.
A year ago, it was very much giving “new construction” in certain areas. This time, it’s noticeably warmer and more settled in. The greenery is filling out, palms are taller, and the walkways feel more tropical.
Is it a lush, jungle-mature resort yet? Not quite. But the progress is real, and it changes how the whole property feels.
The beach setup changed (and I share my favorite seat)
Beach lovers, I didn’t forget you.
A few things shifted with the palapas and beach beds, and I talk about what that means in real life when you’re trying to find a spot. I also share my favorite little “go here first” tip for the best ocean view chairs that get claimed fast.
Also important: water sports are finally up and running now. If you watched my first tour, you’ll remember that was one of the missing pieces early on.
The chair game? So much better than you’d expect
If you’ve ever stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres, you already know the chair situation can feel like an Olympic sport.
At Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres, I’m comfortable saying this: you don’t need to set an alarm. There are more options, more space, and the resort layout just handles occupancy better.
There are still “prime spots” that go first (because of course), especially around the Excellence Club pools. But overall, it’s not stressful the way some resorts can be.
Dining is even stronger now, and I talk reservations strategy
The food was already impressive at grand opening, but with everything fully running, it’s even better.
In the video I cover a few of the reservation-style experiences (like teppanyaki, specialty tastings, and some of the smaller-format dinners). And here’s my biggest practical advice if you’re planning your trip:
- If you’re staying 4 nights or less, try to lock in at least one of the specialty experiences.
- If you don’t get them, do not panic. The standard restaurants here are still excellent.
- If you’re traveling for a holiday (Valentine’s, anniversary trip, birthday), ask what special menus or events are running when you arrive.
Whisper and the X Lounge are finally part of the real experience
Two things people were waiting on:
- Whisper, the speakeasy-style experience, is open and it’s genuinely a fun little “bonus memory” kind of night.
- The X Lounge got a glow up, and it’s now one of my favorite pre-dinner spots, especially at sunset.

My opinion: this resort is officially in its era
After seeing it at near-full occupancy, I can say it clearly: Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres is ready.
It feels polished. The amenities are operating as intended. The resort has a social energy without turning into a party scene. And between the dining lineup, the design, and the experiences, it’s absolutely in the conversation for top Excellence resort.
