If you love the idea of a vacation where you’re handed champagne at check-in, your biggest decision is beach chair or pool lounger, and dinner turns into a full-on event, you’re going to want to keep reading.
I just got back from Excellence El Carmen in Punta Cana. This was our third Excellence Collection resort, and this trip reminded me why my husband and I keep coming back to this brand. It feels polished and luxurious, but still fun, relaxed, and easy.
If you’re considering El Carmen and wondering what it’s really like day-to-day, this post will walk you through the highlights, my favorite “don’t miss” moments, and a few practical tips I give my own clients.
First impressions: the lobby, the vibe, and that signature scent
From the moment you pull up, El Carmen starts strong. You’re greeted with a cold towel and a glass of champagne, which is exactly the energy I want when I arrive at an all-inclusive.
Then you step into the lobby and if you’ve been to Excellence before, you know what I’m about to say. The signature Excellence scent hits you immediately. If you don’t know it yet, you’ll understand why people talk about it. I’ve heard guests compare it to White Tea and Sage from Bath & Body Works, and honestly, that’s a pretty good reference point.
The lobby itself is bright and upscale with colorful seating and marble floors. And as you head down the main staircase, the Martini Bar is right there as the centerpiece. I love grabbing a drink there before dinner, or after dinner when you’re not ready for the night to end.
Grounds, beach, and pools: where you’ll actually spend your days
One thing that surprised me on this trip was just how lush and well-maintained everything looked. From the entrance drive to the paths throughout the property, it’s full of greenery and palm trees, but with a modern Caribbean style.
The beach at Excellence El Carmen
The beach here is truly beautiful. It’s wide, walkable, and lined with palm trees that make it feel like the Punta Cana postcard you’re hoping for.
You’ll find:
- Thatched umbrellas with chairs scattered along the beachfront
- Lots of space to take long walks
- A “this is the Caribbean” vibe the second you step onto the sand
The main pool (and my chair-saving reality check)
The main pool is steps from the beach, and it’s definitely a social hub. There are loungers all around the deck and even some in the pool.
Here’s my real talk tip: if you love a prime pool spot, grab chairs early. This is a popular resort and the best locations go fast.
There’s also a pool bar, which is a fun way to meet people and keep the day light and easy.
Excellence Club: is it worth it at El Carmen?
I’m a big fan of Excellence Club when it matches your travel style. At El Carmen, it can be a game-changer for the beach experience and the overall convenience.
With Excellence Club, you get:
- Access to the Excellence Club Lounge
- A more private, comfortable check-in experience
- A dedicated concierge
- Excellence Club beach areas (there are two)
And one of the biggest perks on the beach is this: Bali beds are available in the club areas, and not in the regular beachfront section.
If you like a more “set up and taken care of” beach day, this is where Club shines. The concierge team can help with drinks, food, and if you’re friendly and consistent, they will often help you keep a favorite spot.
Room styles I recommend (and who each one is best for)
On this trip, our group tried two different room categories, and it gave me a great feel for who should book what.
Excellence Club Two-Story Rooftop Plunge Pool Room
This is what my husband and I booked, and we loved it.
What stood out to me:
- Two levels, so it feels more like a mini home than a hotel room
- A first-floor balcony with a Jacuzzi-style pool and seating
- A walk-in closet with plenty of storage (I always appreciate this)
- A large bathroom with double sinks and a dedicated makeup area, which I had not seen at other Excellence resorts we’ve stayed at
- Nightly turndown service with chocolates, and sometimes fun towel creations
Up on the rooftop terrace, you get:
- A plunge pool
- Outdoor shower
- A sectional for relaxing or even eating up there
- Great views over the resort, especially if you face toward the main pool
I personally love rooftop rooms because that higher vantage point makes the resort feel even more scenic and peaceful.
Excellence Club Beachfront Swim-Up Room
Another couple in our group stayed in a club-level beachfront swim-up, and if you’re a “wake up, swim, repeat” kind of traveler, it’s a fantastic option.
The best part is obviously the swim-up pool with a beachfront view. Their room was near a hot tub and close to a bar, and it became our group hangout spot more than once.
This category is ideal if you want:
- Easy access to water without heading to the main pool crowds
- A social-but-private place to relax with friends
- Beach proximity without giving up the swim-up experience
The spa (Mille Spa): one of my favorite parts of the resort
The Mille Spa is a must if you enjoy being pampered on vacation, even if it’s just once.
They offer a full menu of services, plus:
- A salon for hair and makeup
- A gorgeous bridal suite if you’re getting married on property
- A relaxation room that sets the tone before your treatment
The hydrotherapy circuit: do not skip this
The hydrotherapy circuit is honestly an experience on its own. It includes hot and cold elements, water and non-water treatments, plus steam room and sauna.
If you book Excellence Club, you get one hydrotherapy session included during your stay. If you’re not Club, you can still do it by booking a spa service and using hydrotherapy beforehand.
And yes, there’s also a gym. Quick heads up from our trip: the dumbbells are in kilograms, not pounds. One of our friends learned that the hard way.
Food and drinks: what I’d order again
Food matters on an all-inclusive, and El Carmen gives you a lot of variety. You’ll find:
- A beach buffet option for lunch
- A kitchen-style buffet
- A coffee shop with quick bites and gelato
- An Excellence Club restaurant
- Eight additional restaurants
My personal favorites from this stay:
- Excellence Club restaurant for the 45-ounce tomahawk steak
- Flavor Market for tapas style dining
- Spice for sushi and hibachi
And if you’re the type who loves trying everything, you can even do a progressive-style night: early dinner at one place, late dinner at another. It’s ambitious, but it’s fun.
Nightlife and entertainment: my “don’t miss” list
Evenings at Excellence El Carmen have a nice rhythm. After dinner, a lot of guests head toward the theater area for live entertainment.
Expect:
- Live music
- Rotating nightly shows (including things like circus-style acts and light shows)
- A lively crowd, especially with groups
If you’re traveling with a larger party, arrive early because the theater can fill up.
The silent disco
The silent disco was one of those “you have to do it at least once” experiences. It’s fun even if you’re not a dancer. And it’s also elite-level people watching.
Dominican Night
Once a week, they host Dominican Night, with buffet stations and live music along the main outdoor plaza. I always encourage my clients to make time for it. It’s a simple way to connect with the destination beyond the resort bubble.
A quick note about souvenirs and budget massages
If you want inexpensive souvenirs or a massage at a lower cost, Tropical Treasures is a short walk down the beach.
Just know what you’re getting: massages are done in a shared oceanfront setting, so it’s not private. If you want a quieter, more spa-style experience, stick with Mille Spa.
My bottom line: who I think will love Excellence El Carmen
I believe Excellence El Carmen is a great fit if you want:
- A luxury adults-only all-inclusive that still feels fun and social
- A beautiful Punta Cana beach with palm-lined views
- Strong room options, especially if you love rooftops or swim-ups
- A resort that’s easy to navigate with lots to do, but still relaxing
We traveled with three other couples, and we had an amazing time. I would absolutely go back.
If you’re on the fence, this is one of those resorts where I genuinely think you can book it and feel confident you’re going to have a great trip.
