A year into COVID, I hit a wall.
Not the dramatic, movie-style kind. More like the quiet, everyday burnout that sneaks up on you when life is all kids, dishes, work, and one too many “we’ll travel later” conversations.
My husband and I didn’t need a party resort. We didn’t need a “once in a lifetime” splurge either. We needed a true reset. Warm sun. Great service. Zero decision fatigue.
That is how this Excellence Playa Mujeres review was born.
Back then, I wasn’t even a travel advisor yet. I was just a tired mom with a laptop, obsessively reading resort lists and reviews at night. One name kept showing up over and over: Excellence Playa Mujeres (EPM). People weren’t just saying it was good. They were saying they return again and again.
When I finally looked at pricing, I remember thinking, “Wait. That’s it?” It felt too affordable for something that was being praised like a luxury escape.
So we booked it. And I’m telling you right now, it delivered.
My quick take: who I think EPM is perfect for
Before we get into the details, here’s my honest opinion after staying there.
I believe Excellence Playa Mujeres is ideal if you want:
- Adults-only luxury without the pretentious vibe
- A resort that feels romantic and relaxing, but not boring
- Great pools, great cocktails, and consistently solid service
- The option to upgrade your experience with Excellence Club perks
- A Cancun-area resort that feels tucked away, not in the middle of chaos
It is not the best fit if you want:
- A wild spring break party scene
- Nonstop high-production entertainment like you’d see on a cruise ship
- A tiny, boutique property where you recognize everyone by day two
First impressions: the “wow” factor is real
Some resorts have great marketing photos but feel a little… tired in person.
Excellence Playa Mujeres is not that.
The property felt classy and polished the moment we arrived. The main lobby is a showstopper, especially that grand staircase that leads down toward the Martini Bar. It’s the kind of entrance that immediately switches your brain into vacation mode.
Outside, the landscaping is lush and intentional. Greenery everywhere. Walkways that feel peaceful. It’s the type of resort where you actually want to stroll around after dinner instead of heading straight back to the room.
Getting there: transfers and what I’d do again
We used the included Seasons transfer.
- On the way to the resort, it was a simple van. Nothing fancy, but smooth and easy.
- On the way back to the airport, we were upgraded to an SUV.
What mattered most to me was this: it was private. No stopping at three other resorts. No awkward shuttle timing. No sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers when you’re already travel-tired.
Pools: where the resort energy really lives
If you’re a pool person, you’re going to be happy here.
The main pool has the most action, and it’s where you’ll find:
- A swim-up bar
- Daytime games and music
- The most social energy
But what I loved is that the resort doesn’t force you into one vibe. There are multiple pools across the property, including quieter areas where you can actually read a book without hearing someone’s “vacation playlist.”
Some pools are reserved for Excellence Club guests, and others are open to everyone. That mix gives the resort a nice balance.
Chair strategy (yes, it matters)
If you want prime seating by the main pool, you need to claim it early. That is just the reality at popular resorts.
My advice:
- Go early if you want the main pool scene
- Choose a quieter pool if you hate the “chair race”
- If you’re Excellence Club, use the club areas as your peaceful fallback
The beach: nice, but Excellence Club made it for me
The beach itself was pleasant, but I’ll be candid.
If I hadn’t been in the Excellence Club, I probably would not have spent as much time on the sand.
Why? The Excellence Club beach area had Bali beds, and those changed everything. They turned “a nice beach day” into “I could stay here for hours and never move.”
How to actually get a Bali bed
This is the game:
- Grab one early in the morning, or
- Come later in the afternoon when people start leaving
It’s worth the effort. Those beds were one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Our room: rooftop terrace heaven (and yes, it’s worth splurging sometimes)
We booked the Excellence Club Level Two-Story Rooftop Terrace Suite Ocean Front.
I know that’s a mouthful. But it was also one of the most “wow” rooms I’ve stayed in at an all-inclusive.
What the main level included
The main floor felt spacious and thoughtfully laid out:
- Large walk-in closet
- Bathroom with a shower
- Comfortable bed
- Cozy living area
- Desk space
- Jacuzzi tub with a view of the property
- Furnished balcony for morning coffee or pre-dinner lounging
The rooftop terrace: the real star
Then you go upstairs, and it feels like your own private mini-resort:
- Lounge bed
- Plunge pool
- Outdoor shower
- Additional seating
This is where we truly unplugged. When people ask me what made the trip feel romantic, this was it. There’s something about having a space that is totally yours, where you can end the night under the sky without rushing to a show or fighting for a table.
The spa: hydrotherapy surprised me in the best way
The spa at Excellence Playa Mujeres genuinely impressed me.
Because we were in an Excellence Club Suite, we received a complimentary Aqua Hydrotherapy Session. I had never done anything like it before, and I was obsessed. It’s a mix of hot and cold experiences, water-based therapies, and relaxation areas that make you feel like you’ve hit a reset button.
I won’t spoil the details because it’s more fun to experience it fresh, but I will say this: it was one of those activities that felt both indulgent and actually good for you.
Even if you’re not Excellence Club, you still get a hydrotherapy session with each spa service you purchase.
Food: better than most all-inclusives, and my favorite strategy
Let’s talk about what everyone really wants to know in an all-inclusive review: Is the food good?
In my opinion, yes, the food at Excellence Playa Mujeres is really good, especially compared to the average all-inclusive experience.
Portions leaned smaller, but honestly, that worked in our favor because it’s all-inclusive. We would often order multiple items and treat dinner like a tasting menu.
With 10+ restaurants on site, there’s plenty of variety.
My “two-restaurant night” trick
Here’s what I always tell my clients who want to sample more without overbooking their schedule:
- Do apps at one restaurant
- Then move to another spot for entrée and dessert
It sounds extra, but it’s actually fun, and it keeps the trip feeling fresh.
Wait times and when to eat
Some of the popular restaurants had waits, but nothing outrageous.
Our approach was simple:
- Eat dinner earlier
- If there’s a wait, turn it into a pre-dinner cocktail moment
Which brings me to my favorite place in the resort.
Drinks and nightlife: the Martini Bar is the move
We had excellent drinks at EPM.
The in-room options were restocked regularly, and at the bars, you can absolutely order off-menu. The bartenders were happy to make what you wanted, not just point at a laminated list.
But the real star was the Martini Bar in the main lobby building.
It became our nightly ritual. Great energy, talented bartenders, and it was one of the easiest places to meet other couples without it feeling like a singles scene.
If you go, I recommend:
- Starting your night there before dinner
- Or ending your night there when you want one more drink and a good vibe
Entertainment: good, not mind-blowing (and that was fine)
Every night there was something happening:
- Live music
- Shows
- Silent discos
- Casino nights
And during the day:
- Games and activities near the main pool
- Live music and pool energy
Here’s my honest take. If you are used to cruise ship entertainment, the shows will not feel like that level of production.
But I don’t go to all-inclusives for Broadway. I go to slow down, connect, and rest. For that style of trip, the entertainment was more than enough.
Excellence Club: do I think it’s worth it?
I do, especially for a couples trip where you want that extra layer of comfort.
For us, the biggest value was:
- Access to Excellence Club areas (including the beach setup)
- The room category options (like our rooftop terrace suite)
- The extra perks, including the spa hydrotherapy session
That said, if your budget is tight, you can still have a wonderful trip without it. EPM is one of those resorts where the base experience is strong, and the upgrade is a “nice to have,” not a “must to enjoy yourself.”
Value: the part that still shocks me
What originally got my attention was the price.
Even booking a high-end room, we paid a fraction of what we’d spent at other all-inclusives in the past. And after staying there, it honestly felt like we gamed the system.
To be clear, prices vary by season, room category, and how far in advance you book. But overall, I still consider Excellence Playa Mujeres one of the best luxury values in the Cancun area.

Excellence Playa Mujeres is elegant, relaxing, and genuinely worth the hype, especially when you factor in the value for what you get.
