If you’re craving an adults-only, all-inclusive vacation that feels easy from the moment you land, Excellence Riviera Cancun is one of those resorts that can deliver exactly that. I just got back from a quick 3-night stay, and even though it was short, we packed in a lot. Think lagoon-style pools, a soft sandy beach, impressive service, and plenty of food options that make it hard to repeat the same restaurant twice.

I’ve visited four Excellence properties so far, and this one has a very specific personality. It’s not the newest, shiniest resort in the collection, but it has charm, a great layout for beach lovers, and one of my favorite Excellence Club lounges I’ve ever stepped into.

Quick snapshot: What you should know before you book

Here’s the quick, practical overview I wish everyone had before they commit to dates.

Location: Cancun, Mexico, about 20 minutes from the airport (huge win after a travel day)
Vibe: Adults-only, relaxed and romantic, not a party resort
Style: Mexican Hacienda inspired, with some older architectural touches
Best for: Couples, friends trips, and anyone who wants strong service and a classic all-inclusive layout

This resort originally opened in 2004 and it shows in a few places. You’ll notice it in some of the décor, the marble choices, and the thatched roof vibe in spots. But for me, it never crossed into “run-down.” It felt more like “established,” and honestly, the resort is still beautiful.

One layout detail I genuinely loved: the lobby isn’t tucked way in the back. A lot of the restaurants, bars, and lounges feel closer to the beach, which made the resort feel more ocean-forward and less like you’re trekking back and forth all day.

Pools: Lagoon-style options and a swim-up bar you’ll actually use

If you’re a pool person, Excellence Riviera Cancun does pools really well.

All the pools here have that lagoon feel. Instead of one big rectangle, you get connected curves and different zones, which helps the resort feel less crowded.

My favorite pool areas

Main activities pool: The most lively pool on property, and the swim-up bar is massive. I think it’s the biggest swim-up bar I’ve seen at an Excellence resort.
Excellence Club pool (by the beach): This is where we stayed, and it was my favorite for the mix of scenery, service, and convenience.
Quiet back pool near the spa: This area is more serene and almost gives “lazy river” energy. Great choice if you want calm without needing Club access.

Chairs were generally easy to find, and the resort felt less crowded than Excellence Playa Mujeres during peak pool times.

Pool Chair Strategy

If you want a Bali bed, grab it early. For regular loungers, I didn’t feel like you had to play the “chair game” the way you sometimes do at other resorts.

Beach and ocean: Soft sand, solid setup, and realistic expectations

The beach setup at Excellence Riviera Cancun is a strong point, especially if you like to lounge with a view.

The sand is soft, white, and fine, which I loved.
The property is “deeper” than it is long, so you have a nice beach zone without it feeling like a never-ending shoreline.

Beach zones and where I’d sit

Excellence Club beach area: Chairs with thatched umbrellas plus beach beds. Some beds have no shade, so it’s a great sunbathing spot.
Non-Club beach area: Separate section for regular room categories.
Optional rentals: Beach bed cabanas are available to rent in the middle section.

One thing I always point out to my clients: the water color and clarity in this stretch of Mexico isn’t usually the “postcard clear” you get in some other destinations. The resort uses a barrier to help with seaweed, and the staff does a great job raking and clearing it daily. But if crystal-clear ocean water is your number one priority, you should go in knowing this might not be your perfect match.

There are also two permanent piers that extend into the water. They’re not fancy, but they’re a sweet spot for photos and ocean views. We even saw a couple get engaged out there.

Mille Spa: Gorgeous entrance, but my hydrotherapy was shorter than expected

I love a good spa, and Mille Spa is one of the reasons I keep coming back to Excellence properties. The spa here might be the most visually stunning one I’ve seen, with a dramatic two-story open-air entrance that really makes you pause.

Hydrotherapy details (what to expect)

Hydrotherapy is complimentary before a spa service (except beauty salon services).
If you book Excellence Club, you get one stand-alone hydrotherapy circuit during your stay.

Here’s my honest note: I’ve done hydrotherapy at three other Excellence resorts, and this one felt shorter and we didn’t hit as many features as usual. I don’t know if that was a one-off day or standard here, but it stood out.

Plan Your Timing

At check-in, we were told the complimentary Club hydrotherapy time slots were only available between 4 pm and 6 pm daily. Build that into your schedule.

If you book other spa services ahead of time, you’ll often see a discount (commonly around 20%), so it’s worth asking.

Food: Tons of options, plus one “hidden gem” reservation

Food matters on an all-inclusive trip. And at Excellence Riviera Cancun, you truly have a lot to work with.

You’ve got 11 restaurants total, with one exclusive to Excellence Club, plus a coffee shop, evening food truck, sports bar, pool and beach service, and 24-hour room service.

The standout for me: Korean BBQ (book it early)

The only place you’ll need a reservation is inside Spice for hibachi and Korean BBQ. And the Korean BBQ is a sleeper hit.

Very limited seating (only a couple of two-top tables)
Limited seatings per night
Set menu, multiple courses
Not heavily advertised

We only learned about it because the Club staff offered it at check-in. If you want it, book it immediately.

Other restaurants you’ll likely love

Chez Isabelle: Upscale French, dress code required for men (long pants and collared shirt)
The Grill: Steakhouse classics
Agave: Mexican, al fresco only at this resort
Oregano and Lobster House: Great lunch and dinner options overlooking the main pool
Magna (Excellence Club): Upscale Club-only restaurant, and yes, you can order the 45 oz tomahawk steak

One small challenge: some restaurants are tucked away more than at other Excellence resorts, so it can take a day to get your bearings.

Make the Excellence App Your Friend

Excellence relies heavily on its app. Menus are in the app, and restaurant schedules can change. I recommend checking it daily and loosely planning dinners so you don’t miss your top picks.

And if you’re on a short trip like I was, do what we did: a progressive dinner. Start with tapas, move to your main course spot, and finish with dessert somewhere else.

Rooms: My first swim-up and why I’d do it again

This trip, we stayed in an Excellence Club Swim-Up Junior Suite with an ocean view in Building 8, right by the Excellence Club pool.

Inside, it had what I expect from Excellence:

Double vanity sinks
Walk-in shower
Jacuzzi tub
King bed
Sunken living room area with desk and sofa

A quick practical note: the closet was smaller than what I’ve had at other Excellence properties, but for three nights it was totally fine.

Outside, we had seating plus a pool bed and an outdoor jacuzzi tub. The outdoor tub wasn’t very private, so I’m not sure how much most guests use those.

Swim-up sun exposure (Building 8, Labor Day weekend)

Our pool bed had sun in the morning until a little after 1 pm. We ended up doing:

Beach mornings under an umbrella
Swim-up afternoons with pool dips between lounging

It was my first time doing a swim-up at an Excellence resort, and I get the appeal now. It’s not as private as a rooftop terrace suite, but the convenience was a big win.

Nightlife: Fun shows, but not a “party resort”

If you’re booking Excellence Riviera Cancun hoping for a late-night party scene, I want to set expectations.

Excellence is typically more about:

Evening shows with rotating themes
Lounges and low-key drinks
A romantic, relaxed pace

It’s fun, it’s just not “spring break energy,” and I actually think that’s a feature for most couples.

Excellence Club: I think it’s worth it (and here’s why)

I’ll say it plainly: I’m an Excellence Club girl. I always book it.

For me, the value comes from the complete package:

Exclusive restaurant and lounge access
Club pool and beach areas
Upgraded room service menu
Top-shelf liquor at Club bars
Concierge support and prime room locations
One stand-alone hydrotherapy circuit

And at this resort specifically, the Excellence Club lounge is my favorite I’ve seen. It’s inviting, relaxing, and the food spread felt more generous than what I’ve experienced elsewhere.

One important reminder: Excellence Club is not an add-on. It’s a room category. You have to book an Excellence Club room to get Club benefits.

Booking Strategy I Use for Clients

If your dates show no Club availability, I can often book a refundable regular room first, then we watch for Club rooms to open and do a quick cancel and rebook.

My overall opinion: Who should book Excellence Riviera Cancun?

I believe Excellence Riviera Cancun is an excellent choice if you want:

A quick, easy transfer from the airport
Strong service (Mexico Excellence resorts are the best for this, in my experience)
Great pool variety and a comfortable beach setup
A resort that feels romantic and relaxing, not party-heavy

If you want the newest, most modern Excellence property, this one may not be your top pick. But if you like a resort with character, a smart layout, and consistently attentive staff, it absolutely deserves a spot on your shortlist.
